I forgot to add that after the Marble Gorge we returned to Hualien to get dinner--only we couldn't read any of the signs and we get a little nervous eating the unidentifiable street food. We decided to hit the local 7 Eleven and get ramen cups for all the kids and Brian (I bought a Snickers bar). We filled them with hot water from the coffee machine and we all sat on a minature picnic bench on the side of the busy city street as people stopped and stared and tried to snap pictures of us. We're pretty used to being a freak show, but even this was pretty hilarious in our book--a giant multi-racial American family crammed into the benches of a wooden picnic table eating ramen. Definitely, a classic Simons family vacation moment! After dinner, we went to the train station and caught a train to Taitung to stay in a little hostel. I've said it before, but seriously, Kate and her eight have nothing on our adventures. Don't you think it would make a great reality TV episode to see our family of nine trying to make their way onto a uber-crowded Taiwanese train without losing a kid or one of our giant duffle bags? Well, it definitely had its comedic moments, but overall the kids were fantastic and traveled like pros.
