Halloween was simple this year. I am so busy all the time that I just didn't have the energy to make or buy elaborate costumes for the kids. Also, the school would only let the kids wear their costumes there if they were in the form of a literary character. I let the kids choose what literary character they would like to be. Then we headed down to Seomun market and they all had up to 10,000 won (a little under $10) to find the things they needed for their costumes. Chloe decided to be the Mad Hatter. She designed and created everything herself. It was one of the best costumes on Camp Walker! Sophia decided to be Pippi Longstocking, Florence was the pink and blue version of the Chesire Cat (from the original Disney cartoon), Giselle was the City Mouse, Diamond was Huckleberry Finn and Gwynnie and Oakley went as the quintessential nerds.
Friday night we went trunk-or-treating at a church activity and Saturday night we went trick-or-treating on Camp Walker. The funniest part about Halloween here in Korea is the Korean population that is invited to join the Americans on the Army base. For many of these people, they have never done anything like this--so many of them run house to house, squealing in delight and posing to take pictures with every Halloween yard decoration in sight. And the best part--most of those Koreans doing the squealing are between the ages of 15 and 25.
